W.I.P. Wednesday

Eek!  Has it really been two weeks since a blog post?  Last time I was feeling all depressed about fabric prices and about how much money this hobby costs in general, and thankfully I'm out of that funk now and have things back in perspective.  I almost never splurge on fabric that I really love and to do it once in a while is okay.  And thanks to several comments on my previous post I was able to find a bunch of Denyse Schmidt Chicopee in a few different online shops (Hawthorne Threads & Mad About Patchwork) at really good sale prices.  All is well with the world!

My mind was stuck on Chicopee + Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt (which I got from the library...yay!) and I've been making quick progress on it and have been having SO much fun.  I've never made such small blocks (only 6" square, finished) and I love that every single one is different.  Here's my progress so far:

This is blocks 1-11 and block 32.  I'm sewing the blocks in the order they are in the book, but I made a cutting mistake when getting ready for block 11 and was able to nicely use those pieces for block 32.  A minor detour but I'm back on track :)  I have a pretty accurate 1/4" seam normally, but after making the first few blocks I realized that a scant 1/4" is really required for these blocks.  The first few aren't terribly off size-wise though so I'm hoping it won't make a difference in the long run, and if it does they would be easily fixed.

12 blocks down, only 99 to go!!

These blocks are really fantastic Heather. The colours are so lovely and bright. I really love the acidy green in this collection. Can't wait to see how the rest of your blocks come out.

Your blocks are looking great, Heather! I know what you mean about costs of this hobby. Part of why I like solids so much. :)

I'm so glad that you went for it and got the Chicopee -- the fabrics are just gorgeous. This totally makes me want to make another Farmer's Wife quilt!!!

I really think it is important to make a splurge now and then (as long as it doesn't break the bank of course). Your blocks are AMAZING!

Your blocks are looking really good! You're going well. I must admit I dont consider how much I spend on this expensive hobby of ours. Now that I earn money again, after maternity leave, I figure I can buy things for myself. I'm in Australia and fabric is so expensive here, so I only buy locally if it's on sale or in a destash, or else I order from the US where it works out to half the price. Another way to look at it is that I don't smoke, or drink very much, or spend lots on clothes etc, so I'm allowed to treat myself with fabric.
