Scrappy

The Swoon quilt has quite a few flying geese units, sewn this way. So, one large rectangle + two smaller squares = a lovely flying geese unit. BUT in addition to that, one large rectangle + two smaller squares = 4 triangle shaped scraps leftover.

I was accumulating quite a stack of them already. For each Swoon block you end up with 16 pairs of leftover triangles. I wasn't sure what to do with them, it seemed like such a waste. Then I had a lightbulb moment! Since they are already paired into matching triangles (all happening to be one cream triangle and one patterned triangle), right sides facing, why not just sew them together along the bias and end up with oodles of small half square triangles!!? I feel so smart.

I have now done this with the leftovers I have accumulated thus far and have ended up with 48, 2-1/2" HSTs. What to do with them will come later, but clearly it needs to be something that can go along with the finished Swoon quilt. Maybe some cushions, or a wall hanging, or maybe even as part of the backing for the quilt. . . . . . .

Oh, there are so many fun things to do with HSTs! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

How big will your swoon quilt be? Bed sized? Because you could make matching pillow shams.

HSTs??! Heather, that sounds like something totally unrelated to quilting... you know, in our province here... something to do with taxes! I think I might like what HST in your world stands for better... what does it stand for?!

This is so clever of you! I'd heard of doing this before but never taken the time to do the extra stitching. I think you've convinced me!

you could always make a skinny border with them.

I'm making these too... sewing on the line for the origional unit, drawing another line 1/4" over and then sewing 1/4" from that line... one cut on the unsewn line and there's you're done! I really love your quilt, it's gonna be a stunner!
