Weekend update

I'm sitting here with one doozy of a head cold.  Ugh.  Mostly just the very sneezy sniffly type so far but enough to make me feel pretty mellow.  The kids are playing together at the soccer field nearby (a new thing that they do together, without us, and it's kind of nice!) and my husband is doing some errands so I'm having some quiet time to myself.

I have the first of my big scrappy HST blocks finished!  I am quite happy with it, though it doesn't show the contrast of the layout quite as much as I hoped it would (maybe I need a lesson in value?? maybe I used too many different "neutrals"??).  That said, I think it might be more obvious once I have all 4 of the blocks made and joined.  But regardless, I still think it looks cool and it's great to get through some more of my scraps.

Remember these jumbo granny squares????

I've been thinking about re-visiting these and doing something with them finally, but my hesitation has been that I don't remember which solid I used for the background so I've been putting it off.  Well, I found out this week that this is where being specific on the blog can come in handy!  I looked back in my blog posts and found that I'd made note of it, and it's Kona Snow!  Phew.  Blog to the rescue.  :)

I think this is where I'll stop for now because the kids are home and one of them is requesting raisin bread toast.  :)

Have a good weekend everyone.

Love the HST block. It looks great from here. And you must go back to the grannies- they are too pretty to be orphans. I go back to may blogposts for details like that too! Get better soon!

I love this scrappy block! I don't think you have too many neutrals, but there is a wide range of value in them. A great trick for seeing value quickly (that I learned from Rachel @ Stitched in Color) is to take your photo of the block and turn it black and white. You'll be able to see more easily where you can swap in and out pieces to make the design more defined. I do agree that once you have more blocks together though, the colorful areas will come forward more.

Your HST block looks great, Heather! And it will look really cool once you get several of them together. Can't wait to see your giant grannies come together, too. Blogs are really helpful sometimes, aren't they?

Jumbo Granny Squares are rocking it!
And "Blog to the rescue." might be one of the cutest lines EVER :)

Great block! Do you have a ruby beholder? It's basically a piece of red plexiglass that you look through. It reduces all the colours to grey scale so you can see value (you can do the same thing by turning a cell phone photo into B&W). I think your block looks great, but those are two ways of looking for comparative value between fabrics.

Your huge granny squares are so pretty - great you solved the background mystery!!
