While I continue to mull over ideas for my Notting Hill fabric (any awesome suggestions would be gratefully accepted!), I decided to dive into another scrap project. Does anyone besides me have a love/hate relationship with half square triangles? I love how they look and how many different layouts you can achieve with such a simple unit, but if I'm honest, I find making them to be a bit of a pain! But this morning I was looking at this cushion I made way back when....
......and began to wonder what this layout - which I sort of winged at the time - would look like in a multi-block design. So I went to the highly technical 'Paint' program (hey, I never claimed to be a quilt designer!) and came up with this:
I think it looks pretty cool! What do you think? I've started cutting 5" squares from my scraps, enough to make 144 HSTs, which will make a 2 x 2 layout (ie. huge blocks!) of the above block and should result in an approximate 50" square quilt.
And for the first time I'm going to try using a variety of neutrals for the background, rather than just choosing one. I think (but am not 100% sure) that these are, from left to right, Kona Oyster, Kona Ash, Kona Bone, Kona Iron, and Kona Natural.
That's all I have going on this week. I've also been trying to clean my house this week which cuts into the sewing time!!
Take care everyone.

Me! Me! I'm ambivalent about HSTs! I love the look; hate the trimming!
I think your quilt looks great! Go for it ; ) I am currently working with half square triangles too. I don't mind so much making them. It's usually worth the effort.
oh I like your new project! And I too love/hate hsts! (esp. hate trimming!)
Okay, I don't LOVE trimming HSTs, but they do such amazing things that I forgive them for the trimming part...
I feel the same about HSTs but I cannot stop thinking of pattern using them! Love the pillow, the quilt is going to be awesome!
I feel the same as you too. Your pillow is beautiful and I can't wait to see your quilt finished.
I love your idea of a variety of neutrals - it should give a similar effect to low volume fabrics. Yep HSTs are a pain in the behind but give such a great look - I love the mockup you have made and the pillow is gorgeous.
I think its unanimous Heather! We love the block, and hate the trimming! Your quilt will be amazing though!
Looks great! I also love HSTs but am not so fond of the trimming.
I love it Heather! But then again, I've always loved that pillow!
I love the resourceful quilt designing! I've been experimenting with the TouchDraw app on my iPad. I'm super excited about Threadbias's web-based quilt design tool as well :- ) Thanks for stopping by WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced!
That is an adorable pillow...so very fresh.
wow, this is going to be a gorgeous quilt, love your layout.
that cushion is amazing, I don't remember seeing it before - can't wait to see this quilt!
I was just thinking the same thing about HSTs the other day. I could probably go without making another HST again. But I probably will :)
Great idea! I can't wait to see this one develop!!!
This is a wonderful idea - HST designs are fun to play with!
Oh wow - that's alot of HST's! Great design though :o) I too have a love/hate relationship with them but am considering a baby quilt made with them for my cousins baby due in 8 weeks time...
I love your design!! And I'm so with you on the HSTs.
Well, you certainly will get a lot of practice making HST with this pattern! I love the variety of uses for them but I do find them tricky to get precisely the right size. Love your pillow! Particularly the quilting!
Beautiful connection of tissue !!!
I ♥ HSTs! I even love trimming them! I don't even use them creatively, I like the simple row-after-row look. But I love me a crisp corner :)
Btw, that collection of neutrals is going to look GORGEOUS. Can't wait to see how this progresses!
I love the Nottinghill line too. I think I'm going with Pow Pow or Pow Wow can't remember the name pattern by Cluck Cluck Sew - but can't wait to see what you're doing with it. Such a fun line and great prints. I totally understand why its hard to decide what to do. Good luck!
That is a super cool layout! The variety of patterns that HSTs can make is fantastic, but I can't come up with them myself. I rely on creative people like you for that! :D
