Pulling out another W.I.P.

It's been a good month for me, finishing two languishing projects - my Granny Square bee quilt, and my Octagonal Orb quilt (which can I say, is my new favourite quilt ever!).  Having nothing new in mind just yet I figured I might as well pull out another work in progress.  Anyone remember this quilt top?

This was an idea I had a while back, to make a scrappy quilt using the same half square triangle block layout that I used for this cushion top....

....but use a variety of neutrals rather than all one colour, and obviously scraps of all sorts for the other halves of the squares.  It didn't come out quite as I imagined - I think my neutrals were too varied, so the design doesn't show as much as I'd hoped and it looks rather muddled.  So what I've decided to do is free motion quilt straight-ish lines back and forth only in the neutral areas, leaving the print areas completely unquilted.  Starting in the middle, here's what I have so far:

I like how it looks, but am still not sure how it will work over the whole project, also not sure how I will feel about the print areas being poofy and the neutral areas being densely quilted, but I figure at this point I don't have much to lose and it's a matter of whether this project gets finished...or not.

Thoughts?

Well I for one love the design, I still think and actually the quilting will probably showcase it better so get it finished ;)

I like it with the scrappy neutrals and prints! It kind of makes me go cross-eyed, but in a good way! :D

You are on a roll with finishes! I think the quilting will look amazing - a good mixture of texture, solids and prints.

this is a great quilt, and I, too, like the quilting design. Can't wait to see the whole thing!

I definitely like what you are doing so far - I think you'll know once that's all done if you want to go back and do something different in the printed areas...

I think your original quilting idea was correct. But maybe now you need to do a simple X across the print areas to stabilise it all?
