W.I.P. Wednesday

This week I started a twin size quilt for my friend's daughter Isabelle.  They chose a quilt based on the Stack & Whack tutorial from Kati at 'from the blue chair' and provided me with the beautiful fabrics from Kate Spain's Cuzco line, with a few other random fun prints thrown in.

The quilt will have 48 blocks total and I currently have 32 finished - making 4 blocks at a time, this method goes SO fast!  And I haven't pinned a single thing which is so freeing.  After the Roller Rink quilt, where accuracy and precision were paramount, it's nice to be able to throw accuracy to the wind for a while! A few days ago, at the 16 block point, I laid what I'd finished out on the floor just to get an idea and I feel like it's really coming together nicely.

Not sure why, but I'm particularly fond of this latest set:

Have you ever done a stack & whack style quilt?  It's perfect for a fast project, it produces very little waste, and it's a great project for directional prints because the cutting and sewing maintains the orientation of the fabric.  I think this tutorial would also be perfect for a bee quilt.

Speaking of bees, mine is taking a break for December so I'm finished bee-ing for 2013.  Crazy!  Perhaps I'll still get around to making myself a Have It All Wallet before Christmas, but if not I'm totally satisfied with plugging away on Isabelle's quilt.

What are you up to this week?

Ohhh, that green/chartreuse print in your last set is really eye-catching! Love it. I agree- throwing matching to the wind sometimes is just what the dr ordered! hee hee!!!

Looking good! I HAVE done one whack and stack quilt a while back and it was fun!

I've never tried this method Heather, but your pretty blocks make it look and sound something to put on the 'to-do' list! I've been sewing a dress this week.

this is exactly what I want to do for my son. Faith at Fresh Lemons has some similar square in square quilts, but these ones look even less precise, which is what I love :-) Looking forward to seeing yours all finished!

Looking good Heather. The pattern shows the fabrics well

Another beauty in the making! Love that fabric line (have some stashed away!) and this pattern suits it so well.

Great choice after your last project - I love to mix it up too. I had a stack n whack planned for my son years ago that never made it to UFOdom. I've pinned yours!

That IS coming along beautifully! I might like to try this tutorial since I love the look of a wonkey log cabin but usually hate making them. I like that you make the blocks in "batches".

Very nice, and not pinning is very freeing. Haven't used this technique before but seeing how pretty your quilt is, I might have to give it a try.

Such a fun quilt. I always play favorites when I'm working on a project and a combo or area strikes a sweet spot.

Oooh fantastic, Heather! I have approximately 1,000,000 other projects I should be working on but you're making me verrrrry tempted to start my own quilt like this!

I love this, Heather! Such a fun design and great fabric choices. It's been awhile since I've done a stack and whack quilt and this looks like a fun one. Thanks for the inspiration!
