W.I.P. Wednesday

WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced

{Before I get started with today's news, I just wanted to say that I changed my commenting to not allow anonymous comments anymore (sorry Mom, CJ & Trudy...) due to annoying spammy comments. I hope that I set it so that it still lets the rest of you in though! Let me know if it doesn't and you're unable to comment.}

Things have been busy around here in the last few weeks, finishing both Chrysalis and Sparkle and now things are definitely slowing down. Only a few things on the go now, but for starters I'll show you a picture of Sparkle, all washed up! Crinkly, quilty goodness. :)

This week I started cutting up scraps into 2.5" squares. Now, most people in blog land who are cutting 2.5" squares these days are making Granny Square Blocks. Not me! I love the Granny Square, don't get me wrong, but I'm lacking in solid background fabrics and have waaaaaay too many leftover prints. So what I'm going to do is sew these together randomly into somewhat of a Postage Stamp Quilt design and see how many 36" baby quilt tops I can put together, which will eventually be quilted and given to our hospital foundation.

{this is just a fraction of them...}

Two other items to note:
  • I received the mini vacuum attachment that I ordered from ebay, for the purpose of keeping my new sewing machine in tip top shape, and I think it's going to be great! I used it briefly yesterday, just to try it out, and it's nice to be able to get into those little nooks and crannies. I'll update as I use it more.
  • Connecting Threads Essential Cotton Thread - I'm not sure if I'm sold on it, yet. I used it for quilting the Sparkle quilt, and really had no problems at all. However, when I opened up my machine to clean it out after finishing that project, there was SO.MUCH.LINT in my machine. Like literally balls of fluff inside my bobbin case and feed dogs, etc. It was kind of shocking. I had cleaned the dust out before starting to quilt this, so what was in there was only from quilting the Sparkle. I worry that there's fluff and fuzz also in the upper thread workings of my machine, which is obviously much harder to access. One other thing about the thread - it is called a 50wt., but it definitely seems heavier than what I'm used to. I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing, it just wasn't what I was expecting.

Looking forward to seeing what the rest of you have been up to!

Interesting about the thread...hmm. Love your scrappy squares though - I have a scrap quilt in mind, but slow going here of late! Also, I've been getting spammy anonymous comments too - I'll email ya.

I agree about the Connecting Threads thread, which is why I stick with Superior, and use CT thread as "props" sometimes when I take pictures and a spool of thread would look cute...

I'd like more info on the attachment from ebay.

Yay postage stamp quilts! :) Those are some great scraps to use. I have been wondering about how to get in and clean my machine. There is probably a ton of lint I can't get to, so I am glad you like the mini vacuum attachment. I'll have to check into getting one of those.

Was that anonymous posting comment aimed at me?? Did I try to leave anonymous comments? I'm confused. It isn't the first time though and I know it won't be the last.

Love the crinkly goodness! I think the postage stamps are a great idea, I'm saving all my 2.5 scraps to do the same thing eventually. I've not tried that thread although Judy has been full of lint from my Mettler thread, which didn't happen with the other machine - weird?! I think some machines have thread preferences - she likes Aurifil but I'm not sure my pocket does!!

Oh, a postage stamp quilt would be a winner with those scraps! I actually just finished quilting a quilt with Aurifil and had a massive lint explosion from that (very surprising given its reputation).

the crinkly goodness is by far my most favorite thing about any quilt, lol. nice to know about the thread, i'm going to check out my machine tonight to see what all is collected in there over time! i'm digging the postage stamp idea, have fun with that!

I really should do a postage stamp quilt too. I love yours! Great way to use scraps and I'm not doing the granny squares either! Your Chrysalis is one of my all time favourites!!

That is such a great idea for your 2.5" squares! Those will be lucky babies to receive such beautiful quilts!!

I think what you are going to do with your 2.5 inch squares is wonderful! interesting about the CT thread. I have never used it. What was the mini vacuum attachment like? Is it specifically for your vacuum or is it a universal thing. I am really interested in that!!!

The postage stamp is a lovely idea! You're very generous to make quilts for the charity.

Thanks for the thread info. Very good to know.
