The "quilt as you go" method seems to be all the talk in blogland these days, don't you think? It's not a new method, but a recently published tutorial by Elizabeth Hartman of Oh! Fransson has really gotten it going, I think. It's a great method for bag making, allowing you to skip the use of a lot of heavy interfacing that many structured bag patterns call for. So here's what I made today (click for a larger view):
First off, let me say that all of the scraps used for this were sent to me by Nikki, and since I love her projects and am so inspired by her blog, and using her scraps, I am totally copying what she did for this gorgeous tote she made. A slightly modified QAYG method which she describes in the post I've linked.
This is the first outer panel for a lunch bag I am making for myself using this tutorial by Svetlana. Did I mention that I got a job??? It's at my kids' school in the office, for now just a casual/on-call/fill-in type job, but I will have to take a lunch whenever I go and the plastic shopping bag I used yesterday just won't cut it! And since most of my other quilty projects are on hold at the moment for various reasons, I thought why not make myself a cute little quilted lunch bag? I am SO happy with how the first panel turned out, and am just starting on the second one.
Stay tuned....

Cute! Congrats on the job! Yes, it does seem like QAYG is having it's moment lately!
I am hooked on QAYG now. Just finished my Weekender Travel Bag using this method
loving this! looking forward to the next panel and the finished bag.
I need to check out that tutorial. I've never really been clear on how QAYG works but it sounds appealing! Thanks for sharing your fun project!
Congrats on the job too :).
How fun! I love the quilting! And strangely enough, I didn't realize those scraps were from my stash until I read it! Haha, I guess I just thought you had awesome taste in fabric (which you do!)! :)
SO lovely! Can't wait to see the next step!
It's going to be a great bag!
LOL at Nikki's comment. You know you have too many scraps when...
Congrats on the job and I love what I'm seeing here with your QAYG!
This is coming along nicely. Enjoy your new job ; )
The job sounds great! I live the scrappy qayg look.
I used this method for a zipper pouch I recently made! Its a fabulous way to construct something! I must go and check out Svetlana's tute! Congrats on the new job!
Congrats on the job! Great idea to have a lunch bag!
I love it! And congrats on the job. Working at your kids' school is the best kind of job because it gives you access to them during the day and people will always watch out for your kiddos. I'm not teaching now, but I'm co-chair of PTO and up there all of the time.
That's so pretty! You'll have everyone fawning when you take it to work.
Very nice! It's so fun to jump on a bandwagon now and then! That's going to be one awesome lunch bag but watch out, I'm sure everyone else there is going to want one too!
That is going to look awesome!
I'm trying to tell by the picture, but my eyes are the eyes of an old person. It looks like you quilted the whole piece at once? Not qayg? But you used the stitch and flip method to assemble the fabrics on the batting?
