Grateful for commenters, and a few random tidbits

On my W.I.P. Wednesday post earlier today I posted about the "Sleep" baby quilt I'm making, my question being whether the Kona Coal works as a background colour.  I like Coal a lot, but wanted to see what others thought about using it in this project.  I received a comment from Janice (pssst...check out her blog, it's beautiful!) which made SO much sense to me.  This is part of what she said:  "I think the charcoal is making the white around the letters stand out more than the colors in the letters."  Hmmmm, as much as I like Coal, I think she's right!

Here's the photo showing "Sleep" with Coal:

And the new version, against Kona Snow:

It really does have the effect that Janice was referring to - the colourful letters stand out more against the Snow and the background fabric I used for the letters blends in waaaaay more than it does with the Coal.  I really think I'm sold on this idea, so thank you Janice!  I'll probably sneak Coal into the project as well, just not right against the letters.  (and I see that I inadvertently swapped my two "E's" around in these two versions...I think I'll keep the red one in the centre)

A few more little tid-bits, non sewing related.  My youngest, Owen, has had this bushy long-ish hair for over a year now, refusing to get a haircut.  Well today he finally said he wanted one so off we went!  The before/after....much better, no?

This haircut required a tiny bit of bribery on my part, and what he wanted was a Lego mini-figure.  :)  If you know anything about these you'll know that they come in a sealed bag and you don't know what you're going to get.  You can try to feel what's in the bag as much as you want, chances are you won't guess right!  This is what he got today:

Isn't she lovely??????   ;-)

Now I'm curious how the letters would look against more of the background fabric! ;)

I'm with Holly, I'd be interested in seeing that too. :D With that said, I definitely agree that the white works better than the coal. I LOVE coal (and charcoal) but agree with you that maybe it shouldn't be right next to the letters.

Whatever you decide, it's GORGEOUS! :D

SO much better! Thanks for mentioning my blog! I can't wait to see the finished quilt.
Your son looks great. Mine finally got a haircut yesterday, also. It's hilarious that he got that bride!

Oh, Janice is right! The sleep looks awesome against the lighter background.

Luke gets the Lego figurines too, and I'm always worried he'll get the bride!

BAHAHAHA nice bride! I like the shorter 'do.

Haha, I love that he got a bride! My son has refused a haircut since May...it's been interesting! I call him Bieber, but he's too young for the reference, really. Now I want to see more backgrounds! What about a more subdued cream? Or even the same background as the letters?

Oh it definitely works nicely against the Kona! Definitely stands out more (and I like the red E in the centre too).

Hahaha! My boys have gotten a couple of girl minifigs - they were less than impressed ;o)
I think you've made the right decision - the snow does look great!

I like the snow too! The lego bride is hilarious! He must have been disappointed!

I would have leaned towards the coal, but seeing the two options Janice is so right! Although I think I'd like to see them against a light grey as well - then the letter background would completely fade away. Oh dear! I hope you son wasn't so upset that he'll decide that he won't get his hair cut again!

What about doing a frame around each of the letters in the same colour as the rest of the letter backgrounds - then you could have any old colour you liked for the background background. You could even do a colour blocked background that way, with some coal, and whatever took your fancy.

Wow - so hard to choose! Good advice from Janice though!

Totally agree about the snow!

The letters look GREAT against the snow. What a difference it makes.

Funny about the mini figure.

You should link up this post to my Really Random linky today.

How fun to get a surprise lego! This one is too funny! Love your colorful SLEEP letters! Handsome son, too!

Slightly scary bride! Poor boy.

I love your sleep letters - they look great in the revised version.

I didn't chime in earlier because I figured by now you'd know I'd say white since that's my answer to everything! But Janice put it so much more succinctly than I ever could (I'm a guts not analysis quilter), and, yay, picked the colour I would have. Whatever you pick, though, I can't wait to see the final project.

And Lego bride is awesome. That almost looks like a Reem Acra!

Oh my gosh, that is so funny! Since I have 4 boys myself... that deal you struck along with the outcome are just cracking me up so much. He's a great looking kid :-)
And your sleep quilt is darling. Janice was totally right!
